Prof. Virgil Percec from the University of Pennsylvania attended at the 97th Master Distinguished Lecture

On March 26th, 2018, Prof. Virgil Percec, Vagelos Chair Professor of University of Pennsylvania and the foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, attended the 97th Master Distinguished Lecture  and delivered a lecture titled Programming Biological Membrane and Protocell Mimics with Sequence-Defined Janus Glycodendrimers. 

 

 

 

In addition to the speech, the related activities also included the Luncheon with the Master and a mini-symposium. During the luncheon, Prof. Percec and students from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering had a face-to-face discussion. Prof. Percec asked the students about their research fields and future plans, and offered his guidance and suggestions.

 

 

On March 27th, the 2018 Mini-Symposium on Progress of Polymer Science was held in the Lecture Hall of SCCE. Prof. Percec attended the symposium as member of the Advisory Committee. He made concluding remarks that the presentations given by SJTU faculties and PhDs were both brilliant and impressive. He believed that the potential of scientific research and education in China is immeasurable, and hoped that he could cooperate with the present in the future. The seminar dropped the curtain in a warm atmosphere.

Professor Virgil Percec was invited to join the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia as P. Roy Vagelos Chair and Professor of Chemistry in 1999. He has been elected as Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and Honorary Foreign Member of the Romanian Academy.

 

As a leading expert in polymer chemistry and supramolecular chemistry, Prof. Percec used to be the editor of the Journal of Polymer Science Part A Polymer Chemistry. He has published more than 750 papers in authoritative academic journals like Science, Nature, Nature Chemistry etc. His list of awards includes the American Chemical Society Award in Polymer Chemistry (2004), National Science Foundation Research Award for Creativity in Research (1990, 1995, 2000, 2016), Humboldt Award for Senior US Scientists (1997), the Staudinger Medal from ETH (2005).
