讲座摘要

Fluorinated polyimides (FPIs) have been used and studied in many fields because of their excellent properties such as (1) high heat resistance, (2) low water absorption, (3) water and oil repellency, (4) low dielectric constants and dissipation factors, (5) high optical transparency and colorlessness, (6) low refractive index and small birefringence, (7) solubility in solvents, (8) good flexibility and processability, (9) bio-compatibility, (10) microfabrication, (11) flame resistance, and (12) environmental stability, etc. However, fluorination may reduce Tg, solvent resistance, mechanical strength, and adhesion, and semi-aliphatic polyimides using relatively inexpensive source materials may also exhibit similar properties. In this lecture, the structure-property relationships of polyimides and the optical-, thermal-, and dielectric functionalization of FPIs will be reviewed, focusing on my 35-year study as a polymer physical chemist and spectroscopist.
